It's Fair (and Awards) Season!
It's spring, which means that publishers and authors are busily working on submissions for awards, as well as plunging into the midst of a busy fair and conference season.
Here at GPC, while we are busily working on licensing and permissions projects for our clients, we are also mid-stream into our own conference season. In fact, we have just returned from Publishing University, which is the annual conference for the Independent Book Publishers Association.
By far, this is our favorite publishing-related event as it specifically focuses on the craft of publishing and everyone involved in that process from author to publisher and printers and other service providers like GPC.
This was the first year that we simply attended PubU instead of presenting, and we found the experience absolutely worth it. With dozens of breakout sessions on various topics about publishing, and more time to just talk with other attendees, we easily filled our days with engaging conversations and so much learning!
One highlight of the conference is the annual Benjamin Franklin Awards, which highlight the best in independent publishing in 54 different categories. This year's award winners won out over 1,500 submissions.
We were excited to sit at a table with one of our clients (Interlude Press), who nabbed TWO Ben Franklin awards, and two other publishers at our table won, as well!
The finalist titles that didn't receive a gold award are also winners though, nabbing a silver and the recognition of a powerful section of the industry. Another client of ours, Buffalo Heritage Press, was awarded a silver in the gift book category!
If you are just getting started in publishing, and even if you're a seasoned veteran, we heartily recommend PubU to you as well as IBPA.
Next up in our travel schedule is the New York Rights Fair and Book Expo (both in NYC) at the end of May. These fairs focus on the end product of publishing: the books themselves! We are working on finalizing our schedule for them now, and look forward to seeing more of our clients (and of course, our fabulous agent, publisher, and licensee friends) there!
Until then, we're back to our usual licensing activities as well as following up on everything IBPA!
